Franchise - Following the System

From my research through talking to franchisees, it's my understanding that franchising demands that you follow the system. So, whether the franchise you're looking at is a major food brand or a low-cost home based franchise, it's a must that you're a team player. You must be willing to follow the rules in a rather independent fashion. So, if changing the way things are done is among your favorite pastimes, think seriously about another form of self-employment. Chances are, if you buy a franchise, you won't be happy with even the best franchise money can buy. (And by the way, if you find a franchise without a proven way of doing business, run the other way. The best franchises in the world have the best systems. It's that simple!

Here is an example of what I'm talking about. My good friend owns a Two Men and a Truck franchise. You may know what I'm talking about, the moving truck with the caricature logo of two men sitting in a truck. He always complained that his hands were tied when he wanted to expand or move someone outside of his protected area. The franchisor had their rules and regulations about such things so he was unable to expand his business. It seemed like he was restricted to following the system. I've had many conversation with him and he was not a happy camper.

This type of story is all too common within the franchise industry. It's very important to choose the franchise business that is right for you. You may have heard me say this over and over again, but I cannot stress this fact enough. If you're so independent or you cannot follow the rules, franchising is not for you. If you're the type of person I just mentioned, start your own business, or buy a small independent business where you have total control. Choosing a franchise when you're not a team player can make your life very stressful.

Even if it's only on paper, the best franchise opportunity will produce a stressful life if it is not for you. You probably won't last in a business that you don't like, and you definitely won't be happy showing up every day. This happens time and time again, so find a venture that you love. Don't be part of the adult population that is unhappy at work. The only reason they stick to their job is because they get a paycheck. And that paycheck allows them to go about the rest of their lives. On the other hand, he entrepreneur never leaves their business (mentally); it is constantly on their mind.

Take it from me, I owned a small business for 21 years, and everyday my mind was inundated with business. I did not have a franchise business. I was free to do my own thing. I made the rules as I went. I controlled everything. I was in charge. I was the business and the business was me. I created the system. If all of this sounds like that is what you would like to do, then by all means, start your own business and DO NOT buy a franchise. But let me caution you; it takes a lot of hard work, and a commitment beyond all commitments. It's your life!

Choosing the Right Franchise

What is the best way to choose the right franchise business? The decision to buy a franchise business is a big one. You may wind up putting a lot of money on the line to buy that franchise. So it's critical that you buy the franchise that's right for you. The best place to start when considering franchise opportunities is with a business that you have always hoped to own. You may also recognize that your community needs a certain type of business, or that there is something missing in your town. Filling one of these gaps with a new franchise opportunity can be an excellent choice.

The second aspect to consider when looking at a franchise is the cost. The cost can be substantial, and all franchise opportunities' cost varies. One thing to take into consideration is the resources you have available. Many franchisors want the potential franchisee to have a certain amount of liquid assets before they will consider selling them their franchise. Lending options are another way to find those liquid assets. Do you have anyone that would help you invest in your business? having investors is yet another way to generate capital.

Can you afford the time required to make your business a success? Are you currently working a job? Will that job allow you the time to insure your franchise gets started and runs properly? These are important things you need to understand before jumping into a franchise business. Being with the business at the beginning is critical. No manager or employee is going to run the business the same way the person that invested the money. Make sure your can spend the time required to make your business a success.

The final aspect to consider is research. You should carefully research the franchisor before even considering entering into a franchise agreement. The franchisor should be able to provide you with all the relevant information, including costs up front. Even though that is the case, it makes good sense to get references, by visiting other franchises, or searching Google. You may even want to call the Better Business Bureau. The more positive information you can find on the franchisor the more confident you will be that this is a good opportunity. One more thing; make sure you find out what sort of training and support is available for new franchise business owners. The proper training is critical, but more importantly will be the support you receive after you pay for the franchise.

Franchise Questions

Will you be happy as a franchisee? Can you make the money you need to provide for yourself and your future? Where do you even start, with thousands of franchise opportunities available? These along with many other questions will surface as you begin your quest to find the right franchise business.

Before you even begin searching for franchises, you need to do a comprehensive evaluation of your own strengths and weaknesses. The best way to start is by sitting down, getting out a pad of paper and a pen, and as objectively as possible answer these eight questions:

1. What part of your current and past jobs have you liked doing the most?
2. Are you an animal lover? Auto buff? Artistic? What skills/hobbies do you have that may be applicable to a franchise business?
3. Are you status conscious? Does it matter to you what the product or service of the franchise is or does the business potential matter more?
4. What part of your current and past jobs have you liked doing the least?
5. Do you have experience managing employees? Did you enjoy it, and are you comfortable with recruiting employees?
6. How much capital do you have to invest? Can you afford to do without a regular income during the start up phase of your new business?
7. What are your financial goals?
8. Owning a franchise is all about following someone else's system. Can you picture yourself executing a system you didn't create?

These questions cover a variety of categories, including your strengths, weaknesses, management skills, and your financial situation. Answering the questions listed above, will probably lead to additional questions. If so, write down the questions and your answers. You will also begin to get a clearer picture of your gifts and talents. You may also see what you can bring to a franchise business and what you expect to receive in lieu of your talents/financial investment.

Once you have done an in depth evaluation of yourself, the next step is to start looking at franchise opportunities. Evaluating franchises, based on your answers to the questions, will give you a better understanding of the franchise business that is right for you. It may take some effort to find the right franchise so don't get discouraged and by all means, don't choose a franchise that does not fit your profile.

Franchises are Popular Among Entrepreneurs

Franchises are one of the most popular ways to start a business. In 2005, there were about 850,000 franchises operating in the U.S. alone with approximately 10 million people employed. Sales volume accounted for about 40% of all retail sales at around $1.5 billion. This information is all according to research which was conducted by the International Federation Association and the National Franchise Association.

At the present time, I don't really know if there is any business left that has not tried the franchise. You can find fast food restaurant franchises, cleaning services and even automotive shops. The most popular franchise categories still seem to be the restaurant, deli and sandwich franchises.

Franchises all have a couple of things in common that makes them attractive to potential business owners:
1. Fast start up utilizing a working marketing system;
2. Peace of mind because it has been proven to work already;
3. Exclusive territory (in most cases).

At the same time, there are known disadvantages. For example, many franchise companies don't live up to the standard of support they promised. Some franchises are overly strict with regards to their branding and marketing requirements, which may be disappointing for a creative entrepreneur. One other disadvantage is the work pressure, especially when operating a franchise that requires hiring employees or staff.

The International Franchise Association found that the annual gross income for a typical franchise ranges between $75,000 - $125,000 (before taxes). With an investment level of let's say $250,000 you can expect a pay back time of around 3 years. To me, that's too long. It's clear that becoming a franchisee requires enough cash to sustain yourself, and the business, in the first years. It also requires a lot of sustained hard work to get the business off the ground.

If you do not have any money to get your business off the ground, it's better not to start at all. Lack of financial backing, or capital, has been the downfall of many businesses. Careful planning is the key. Planning, combined with a preparedness to live a frugal lifestyle for years to come, is very important.

Do you have what it takes to survive the tough times?

I understand that there are plenty of franchise opportunities with proven track records. Many franchises can generate good income for years to come, if you're willing to put forth the effort. There are many success stories in the franchising industry, which keeps growing even as you read this. For once, duplicating and being a copycat can pay rich dividends, if you just stick to the plan.

Buying a franchise is very popular, but it has never appealed to me. I always felt like I was buying my own job, which I had enough of when I owned a business. The amount of investment combined with the amount of work to put forth simply does not match with my personality. Been there, done that! I would rather invest a bit less, like with the offer of the Ultimate Team, and work less hours. I would also like a much faster return on my investment.

If you're an entrepreneur looking for a franchise, here's one you may want to take a look at. Home Instead was started in 1994 and may be the perfect franchise for you. All Home Instead franchisees receive extraordinary training. As part of their training, each franchisee has a business coach to help guide them through the first months in business. This is provided to insure a smooth and successful start-up. They also provide proprietary software to help them run their franchise.

All franchises have excellent training and support, but Home Instead excels in this area by providing field visits, conferences, discussion groups, online resources and continued assistance from the Support Department for as long as you are in business. They have more than 37,000 CARE-Givers at more than 800 independently owned and operated franchises throughout the world. Home Instead is providing seniors and families around the world with something much more than meals and running errands. They offer peace of mind; they are the only franchise that offers peace of mind to the elderly.

The population of the elderly is growing by leaps and bounds. With a population that is aging rapidly as the baby-boom generation starts to approach retirement age, Home Instead provides an incredible franchise opportunity. The numbers are staggering. By 2020, 60 million North Americans will be 65 years old or older, representing a 62% increase. Through surveys by several companies, 80% of these seniors say they would prefer to stay at home as long as possible, before considering a health care facility.

Paul Hogan, CEO of Home Instead, understands these demands of caring for a senior first hand. He and his wife Lori founded Home Instead after taking care of Paul's grandmother for over 12 years. "After experiencing the rewards and challenges of taking care of my own grandmother, I thought other families must need the same kind of help I needed." said Hogan. "Our mission, today is to be the world's trusted source of non-medical companionship and home care for seniors."

Many would be franchisees look at Home Instead because they know it represented the strongest brand in non-medical senior care. And not just from their research, either. Many individuals can and do work their way through school as Home Instead CARE-Givers. On the other hand, many people work at the corporate level in offices that are downsizing, and they then decide to have their own business. With Home Instead, they can be a business owner, in an area that will continue to grow.

Caring for your loved ones is not an easy task. However, sending your loved ones to a nursing home or a home for the aged can be very depressing for them. Having your loved ones stay at home, a place they're familiar with, is a great idea. Home Instead has a terrific franchise idea, something that is going to be needed.

The biggest surprise about owning a Home Instead franchise is how gratifying it is. According to a franchise owner, "to see the difference our services make in the community and to hear the stories from families and caregivers about how we've helped those seniors and families. It is really overwhelming."

Franchise System for the Business Professional

I was reading some posts in a forum on the Internet about franchises, and which franchise systems seemed to be the most professional, the best, and the most affordable. I came across this one post and I had to reply to the writer. Below is an excerpt of my comments:

Lance, in your post, you mention that "the best categories for profitability seem to be service franchises, auto franchises and unique categories." I agree with that statement with one exception, finding qualified technicians. Finding skilled, well trained technicians, in the "information world" that seems to have enveloped us, is quite difficult. We all know that employees (especially skilled technicians) can make or break a business.

When spending money on a franchise system that could provide a professional business person with a nice income, I'm not sure service franchises, and/or auto franchises should be where the franchisee should spend their money. As a former auto/truck business owner of twenty-one years, I know how hard it is to find qualified technicians, one of the reasons I sold the business.

Although I did not own a franchise business, I was a sole-proprietor, I still know how fast the vehicles, machinery, and/or equipment is changing. So spending money on a franchise, and then finding individuals to repair the equipment, will not be an easy task, hence, my feeling about purchasing a franchise in the service industry.

I believe there is a better solution for business professionals looking for a franchise, a franchise where they do not have to spend their life savings. To learn more about an alternative to a franchise business that I'm talking about, go to a franchise solution.

Franchise - FAQ's

Franchises play an integral role in our lives and the American society in general. You're probably a frequent customer at the local Quizno's or Subway franchise. You may even know people who have found success through a franchise business. Perhaps you've even considered purchasing a franchise yourself. If so, you probably have some burning questions you haven't quite been able to find the answers for. You're not alone!

The current economy and society have brought new concerns to the surface about the franchise industry. Here are a couple of questions (along with my answers) that are asked quite frequently:

1. Should I own my own business before buying a franchise?

Some franchisors would prefer that you didn't, but I believe that it couldn't hurt. The franchisor's reason why they prefer you not to have had you own business is, because of bad habits that they'd have to spend time breaking, if your business was in the same industry. You'd have [management] styles that may not be compatible with theirs, and the normal and natural thing would be for you to always slip back into your comfort zone.

On the other hand, having experience working in any business gives you discipline. You understand how to work with customers, meet deadlines and take on responsibility as opposed to relying on your co-workers and your secretary in a big company. All in all, I would rather have someone who spent years in business, but it's a personal preference among franchisors.

Either way, a lot of franchisors realize that people who come out of training remember about 20 percent of it, and then they struggle for a while until they grasp the rest of it through practical experience in the [franchise] setting.

2. Would it be wise to cash out some equity from my house to invest in a franchise?

Given today's interest rates on home loans, I would say go for it. What do you have to loose? Franchises are modestly priced. Even though, I would be careful with any investment. However, there's really no difference between investing in a franchise and investing in a stock. If you invest in a stable, secure franchise (stock) with a great track record and good performance, there's not a lot of risk.

On the other hand, if you invest in a franchise based on a trend or fad, or one that you don't know a lot about and haven't done your research on, then I would say no. I wouldn't invest a dime. But remember, that's just an investment decision. Most people use the equity in their homes because it's usually their major asset and they can borrow against it. Make sure whatever you're investing in is a rational investment. One more piece of advise, do not jump into something just because the salesman sold you on it.

Choose a Professional Franchise Business for Your Second Job

Facing some expenses in the future? Need a new car? Do you have a son or daughter going off to college? Want a new house? If you're facing some future expenses, why not start your own business? That's what I would recommend before I went out to get a second job. WHY? You can make a lot more money owning a business than working for someone.

Typically, there are many reasons why people choose to take on the challenge and responsibility of a second job rather than start their own business. People rarely take on a second job for pleasure. However, many people considering a second job hardly ever think about other options, like starting a home business, or buying a professional franchise business. A home business or a professional franchise business offers three benefits that the typical second jobs does not.

The first benefit that a home business or professional franchise business offers, over most of the second jobs available, is flexibility. A home business or a franchise makes it easier to work around your primary job and family commitments. There are very few second jobs that offer the flexibility of a home business. A home business can literally be run when and where you like. In fact, you could even work your home business of franchise business during your lunch hour. Unlike a second job, it's easier to get time off for holidays and vacations when you're the boss.

The second benefit of a home business or professional business franchise is you get to choose what that business is. You can take advantage of on your interests, skills, and God given talents, which is not something most second jobs offer. The likelihood of finding a second job that fits your gifts and your schedule is probably somewhere between slim and not available. The Internet can be a tremendous resource of information on every imaginable franchise, home business, or topic of interest; just do a search on Google. I'm confident you can find your niche on Google!

Finally, a home business or professional franchise business offers on-the-job training. With a plethora of web conferencing systems, it's easy to get training from a variety of experts in any field. No matter what you decide, there is a wealth of information on the Internet. Go to Google, and do a search. It can help you find the right professional franchise business so you can make your second job, a home business, both profitable and rewarding.

Remember, if you're looking to make extra money, look for a professional franchise business, one you can work from the comforts of your own home.

A Low Cost Franchise Business

Owning a franchise business takes hard work. Are you up to putting forth the effort it takes? Owning a franchise business can also take a lot of money, although it doesn't have to. There are plenty of low cost franchise businesses available, just search Google.

Back to putting forth the effort, even if you decide on a low cost business franchise, you will still have to put forth the effort to make it work. Running a business takes time, and effort to become prosperous, but like I said before, it doesn't have to take your life savings. A low cost franchise business may be an option for you.

I've mentioned this before in my posts because not everyone has the money to purchase a McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King. If you're like the majority of people, and you want to own a franchise business, take a look at a low cost franchise business. Go to Google, and type in, low cost franchise, and see what is available, you just may be surprised.

If you don't find what you are looking for, check out the information at low cost franchise business by clicking on the link. If you have any questions after checking it out, you can contact me for additional information. But remember, whether you choose a traditional franchise business, or a low cost franchise business, it still takes hard work to be prosperous. If you're up to the task, do your due-diligence.

A Franchise Solution holds a great reputation for the best online work at home franchise business information available on Google.

How to build an online Franchise Business Using a Virtual Conference Room

Online home based franchise business methods are continually changing on the net. Professional home based business owners are becoming aware of the new and advanced tools that are available to them. Many online franchisees are searching for these tools to enhance the overall productivity of any online franchise business. This post is an attempt to explain how you can use a virtual conference room to enhance your franchise business.

With today's cutting edge technology, online virtual conference rooms are a must for any small home based franchise business. The virtual conference room I'm talking about is a product of Vereconference, the highly effective web conferencing system that makes communications for the online franchise business simple. Individuals login to a room via a web address (URL) or link; this link will take them directly to the conference room. From there people will listen to the trainer speak about any subject concerning your business. There is no need to travel to other cities, or states to get the necessary training. All of the training can be conducted right on your PC, via the Internet.

VereConference's VoIP online conference room comes with a variety of tools, including recording features where you can save the training in MP3 format for later listening. The atmosphere of a virtual conference room promotes education at its finest. I use the virtual conference room everyday for communications with other possible franchisees, to share marketing strategies and other business ideas, and with customers, to share information about our products. Giving and receiving information is easy with a virtual conference room. Communication concerning your business is a must for any franchise business owner.

Virtual conference rooms can be used to train your executives or sales people anywhere in the world. Any subject can be taught in the rooms to improve your franchise business.

The Ultimate Team is a big proponent of virtual conference rooms. The ultimate team uses these rooms to keep their team organized and up to date on all company information.

As a business professional searching for that perfect franchise business, your solution may be a home based franchise. Business men and women typically go to Google to do their searches on franchise businesses. That is where you will find all of the information needed to make an informed business decision. Google is the best place to do research because the information is readily available. Don Conrad, a friend of mine, come across some very unique articles about buying franchise system. I come upon this one at http://articles.directorym.com/Franchise_System_Failure-a852283.html#8055221 and thought I would add this as a resource here.

Avoid Buying a Franchise Business that Might Go Under

A franchise company usually begins when someone has a desire to bring a product or service to a wider audience. One or more units, often called company stores, are opened so the product or service can be tested, refined, retested and improved. Once the company stores have experienced some success, the company will begin early franchising efforts.

Opening the first 10-25 franchised units is often the most difficult phase for a franchisor. The company will have to learn how the concept works in a variety of locations and with a variety of franchisees. Marketing can be tried on a larger scale and there are hundreds of details to be modified, changed, refined and locked down.

Once this initial group of franchisees experiences financial success, the franchisor will open up franchising to a larger group. If you are a risk taker, feel free to jump in at any of the earlier stages of a franchisor's development. If you'd rather avoid risk, confine your research on potential franchise opportunities to those companies that have survived the initial stages and have at least 25 or more successful franchise operations in place.

Yes, there are companies that are solid gold from inception. But as a general rule, the earlier you get involved in any business, the greater the risk. Not only that, by joining an established company you will also avoid many of the bumps along the road. A franchise that has reached a modest number of successful franchisees will have added sufficient infrastructure to support you and the marketing/branding efforts will help draw customers to your location.

By focusing your search on those companies who have reached this stage of development, you can increase your chances of success in finding one that will be around for the long term.

A Franchise Solution holds a great reputation for the best online work at home franchise business information on Google.
